The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) houses world-renowned archaeological and paleontological collections, yet decades of records remain in fragile, analog formats. This legacy data, which contains vital information on human evolution and biodiversity, was at high risk of deterioration. Without a centralized digital system, these irreplaceable collections were difficult for researchers to access and nearly impossible to share with the global public.
DDD partnered with NMK to implement a full-scale digital archiving and heritage preservation program. Our Kenya-based associates converted legacy paper records into a structured, searchable database and utilized 3D photogrammetry to create high-accuracy digital replicas of key specimens. To ensure the project's longevity, DDD focused on deep capacity building, equipping NMK staff with the technical skills to manage a virtual museum and maintain a central repository integrated with their institutional IT systems.
