Combining Tech and Tradition to Preserve History

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum serves as a vital memorial to the victims of the Khmer Rouge. However, its archives, comprising over 400,000 fragile documents and photographs, faced the threat of permanent loss due to physical deterioration. Without a digital repository, these invaluable records remained largely inaccessible to the global public, researchers, and educators dedicated to genocide prevention.

In partnership with UNESCO and The Brechin Group, DDD implemented a multi-phase preservation and engineering project. Our teams meticulously assessed, scanned, and indexed the entire collection, creating a bilingual digital database in Khmer and English. Beyond the technical digitization, DDD also focused on capacity building by training museum staff in advanced data management and preservation workflows to ensure the long-term sustainability of the archives.
